About the Best of NYC Cruise - Circle Line Sightseeing

Even though the island of Manhattan is only 12 miles long and about two miles wide, it can be overwhelming to first-time visitors. But seeing it from the water makes it not only less intimidating but even more welcoming.

Guests are welcomed onto the ship by having their photo taken – the perfect opportunity to ham it up by posing like Charlie’s Angels or jump in the air like lottery winners. There are several seating areas: indoor and outdoor, shaded and not. A few minutes after the cruise begins, the bow (the front of the ship) opens up for standing passengers.

The Circle Line Sightseeing Best of NYC Cruise is narrated by knowledgeable and entertaining tour guides, and while the ship follows the same path every time, no two guides are alike, so you may get vastly different tidbits of information if you take it more than once. Whereas one guide might know Yankees stats by heart and quote Yogi Berra, another will point out where Ben Stiller grew up or talk about painter Julian Schnabel’s hot-pink building in the West Village.

The boat slips out of the pier, in the shadow of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, and navigates the island in a counterclockwise rotation, with a brief detour at the Statue of Liberty. All five New York City boroughs are visible from the boat, though Staten Island is only seen in the distance.

Cruising south down the Hudson, the various Midtown skyscrapers are visible on the left; the markedly less-exciting New Jersey coast on the right, so guests should take this into account when choosing which side to sit on.

Most visitors are interested in viewing the World Trade Center site to learn more about 9/11, and while the official memorial is not visible from the river, the new towers under construction are. The downtown marina is also quite a sight, with its squadron of incredibly sleek,million-dollar yachts.

As the ship navigates around the Statue of Liberty and heads up the East River, the trip gets even more interesting. The recently reopened Governors Island, rapidly gentrifying Brooklyn and, of course, the gorgeous procession of bridges connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn come into view. First the Brooklyn Bridge, the most iconic of them all, then the Manhattan and the Williamsburg in quick succession.

Queens, the borough that gave the world rapper 50 Cent and punk rock icons the Ramones, comes up on the right after Brooklyn. Back to the left, there’s Spanish Harlem – former home of Tito Puente and Marc Anthony. That little footbridge connecting Spanish Harlem to Wards Island might look familiar because that’s the “road” that Michael Jackson and Diana Ross “eased on down” in the 1978 film The Wiz.

What most visitors to the city will be surprised by are the acres of forested parkland at the northernmost tip of the Manhattan Island. The area around the Columbia University crew team’s building it is so bucolic, it looks like New England. As the boat turns left back into the majestic Hudson, the final 40 minutes or so of the tour begin. The Cloisters, Grant’s Tomband the Riverbank State Park – a 28-acre park built on top of a waste processing plant that rises 69 feet above the river – pass by.

Tour length
Two and a half hours

Did you know?

The oldest bridge that the Circle Line Best of NYC Cruise passes under is called High Bridge and, despite its name, it was originally an aqueduct that carried water down from the Catskills and into New York City.

When US Airways Flight 1549 made its famous emergency landing on the Hudson River in 2009, the Circle Line had one of the first boats on the scene and helped with the rescue.

About one-third of the cruise takes place on the East River, which is not actually a river at all, but an estuary, fed by Upper New York Bay and Long Island Sound.

Back in the 17th century, Liberty Island – which now houses the Statue of Liberty –Ellis Island and the lesser known Black Tom Island were known as the Oyster Islands for their incredible quantities of delicious bivalves (since wiped out, sadly).

Join us for a full circumnavigation of NYC!

The tour aboard the yacht 'Manhatten' circumnavigates the entire island with running commentary by an architect who points out points of interest. Included in the fare is a complimentary beverage and snacks. Each table had it's own generous selection of delicious cheeses, nuts & dried fruit, crackers, cakes and fresh fruit, and the complimentary wine was really good! The ship is a 1920's style yacht and very nice. While the trip does last nearly three hours it goes by pretty quickly. If you like boats or have never seen Manhattan from the water this is a must do. There is also a Sunday brunch cruise that circumnavigates Manhattan.

Sailing aboard the schooner is such a quiet and relaxing way to take in the views. You can take an afternoon sail of the Schooner Adirondack America 2.0, which is absolutely the best way to see the harbor and the river. Skip the big tour boats, the water taxis and the booze cruises. Also, there is a Sunday brunch, a 2-hour sunset sail, and a night sail.

Tips: Be sure to bring hats / sunglasses and apply sunscreen before headed out on sunny days. There's no shade on the deck of a sailboat. There is a bathroom, called a "head" on a boat, but 20 visits can put strain on the small toilet of a boat. Be sure to use the restroom before just in case.

A couple of tips, take your own food if you want anything more than a cheese plate to eat (we didn't have one, but it looked good!) and take an extra layer of clothing. The boat has large panoramic windows and it can get pretty cold while you're out on the water.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2014
Using a discount from Goldstar that took our fee down to $36 apiece, we enjoyed a leisurely 2-hour cruise along the Hudson, down to the Statue and LIberty and back from the Chelsea Piers that was one of the highlights of our New York vacation.

The Adirondack is a comfy 80-foot schooner with cushioned seats along each side, piloted by an engaging bearded chap who I think may have been a Justin, but his two mates, who also served drinks, were definitely Dan and Danny. Maybe-Justin explained up front he wouldn't be doing a lot of tour narration but would try to answer any questions we might have.

The cruise came with three drinks -- beer, wine or Champagne, or nonalcoholic. The night we cruised was balmy and calm, and the waters of the Hudson were nearly glassy. The schooner is motored out and, weather permitting I presume, they do raise canvas so you do get the experience of being under sail

You get long looks at the lighted Empire State Building, the One World Trade Center and the rest of the Manhattan skyline, and a very close-up look at the Statue of Liberty.

The excursion is well worth the money, especially if you can get a Goldstar discount. They hang out a little bag into which you can discreetly add a tip if you wish, which you should.

I am mesmerized by NYC, travel here about 3 times a year, and have always wanted to circumnavigate the Island of Manhattan! I have done the Circle Line sunset tour and that was good for sure. However, the Classic Harbor Line elevates the experience to an entirely new level. Please treat yourself, your family, your friends to this exceptional experience. The crew is super friendly and attentive. They put you completely at ease on the vessel. The boat is elegant and comfortable with an elegance and intimacy because of the small size of the boat and the group. Again the staff is super nice. The best part of the cruise for me was our amazing AIA guide. His depth of knowledge and presentation style were exceptional. I am inspired to learn more about this island I love!!! Thank you Classic Harbor Line! You are exceptional!
It a tour on a 1920's style yacht that is narrated by an architect. There is seating inside, as well as bathrooms and a bar. You can also go on the deck. My husband and I 'braved' the cold weather, but it was worth it. You can still hear the narrator outside, as well as inside. It's an excellent way to see the city!

That boat is stunning, all wood with comfortable cussioned benches, very visually pleasing. The captain David was proffetional and the bar and skipper were all adorable, kind, funny and helpful. ( informative) The champayne delicious, the views incredible. I hope to do the jazz boat trip with them one day. I have been on other boat trips in NY but they were not nearly to the same standard. Worth paying the extra money to get a far more comfortable, quality and memorable experience. This is good for romantic, family, group or lone trippers.

FABULOUS. The highlight so far of our trip. More expensive than the larger tours but definitely worth it. Lovely mahogany wood interior with comfortable seating and complementary first drink. Blankets provided to sit outside and take photos (it was Easter and cold). Friendly, professional crew. We were exceptionally lucky as it was a clear night, the wind had dropped and there was a full moon.

We enjoyed a fabulous 2.5 hour circumnavigation of Manhattan on a classic yacht that included a rich narration of the architectural history of the island. The guide was terrific and the crew was very friendly. The $80 fare included a glass of wine or beer and snacks. We had been on Manhattan circumnavigations before but this was truly special because of the architectural narration.

A (just under), three hour circumnavigation of Manhattan in a sleek yacht guided by the American Institute of Architects, with wine and snacks; a complete joy. Bridges, ferries and skyline, infrastructure and boathouses, stark cliffs, islands and lush parks, innovation, engineering, practicality and history; a very informative and informed New York tour. You may sit within the comfortable lounge or brave (and in December that's the word), the deck, where they will give you blankets and bring you Champagne while you sit, freeze, and enjoy the passing spectacle from the Harlem River to the Statue of Liberty, docks to penthouses, Mausolea to Public Housing - it's all fascinating. The crew are very friendly, welcoming and professional. Many of those aboard were locals viewing their own city from a different perspective, I can only commend this trip to you unreservedly; it's just fantastic fun for grown-ups.

Our boat was completely full (approx. 30 people), but it never felt crowded. The staff and crew were some of the nicest people we met on the trip. Please remember to tip if you take this cruise. The staff works on tips but is very modest in the solicitation. The bathrooms (called heads) were much larger and nicer than I had expected for such a small boat.
Be sure to tip well. We left $30, which is divided between the band (4 ppl) and the crew (3 ppl).

Great way to appreciate the NYC skyline, and on a nice night it is beautiful.

I was going to book on-line, but tickets are non-refundable and the weather forecast looked dodgy so we decided to wait until the last minute. I booked by phone in the morning for a 3:30PM Sunday cruise, and had no trouble getting two spaces - probably due to the late date and cool weather.  The trip lasted about 2 hours, during which time the sun went down and the lights of Manhattan came up. And what a grand sight that is. They serve a free drink and very generous fruit and snacks.

5 star rating: Highly Recommended October 2014

We took the sunset cruise our first night in New York City---it was fantastic! Beautiful views of the city and the Statue of Liberty. The sunset was gorgeous and then as darkness set in to see the 2 beams of light from the twin towers was incredibly touching. The crew and captain were very capable as well as entertaining. I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone visiting New York.

5 star rating: Highly Recommended October 2014

This a wonderful, relaxing, and totally enjoyable experience that I would highly recommend. The ship is a beautiful wooden sailing ship with lots of room to roam around. Great way to see Lady Liberty and the Skyline of the West Side and also Jersey City.
